Make an appointment to see if you are a candidate for refractive surgery!

Dr. Davison performs PRK or surface refractive ablation using the VisX Star S4 Excimer Laser. This laser uses state-of-the-art technology to analyze your visual system and determine the most appropriate treatment to provide you with clear, uncorrected vision.

PRK or photorefractive keratectomy is a procedure where the surface of the eye is re-shaped using the Excimer Laser. No incision or flap is made in the cornea, as is done with LASIK. One advantage of PRK over LASIK is that since no corneal flap is created, there is no risk of flap complications during or after the procedure. With LASIK, the corneal flap that is created never heals completely. Thus even years after the procedure, the flap can be dislodged with just minor corneal trauma.

This does not mean that PRK does not have any drawbacks. With PRK, the recovery of comfortable vision (20/40 or better) may take 7 to 10 days whereas LASIK offers immediate visual improvement. LASIK also is less painful in the immediate post-operative period. However, long term visual quality may be better with PRK.

Some patients are not candidates for refractive surgery, and this will be determined on your refractive evaluation visit. Although we charge a $100 dollar fee for the refractive evaluation, should you be a laser candidate and proceed with surgery, this charge is credited toward your refractive procedure fee.

Unlike most offices, the refractive evaluation is performed by Dr. Davison, not by a technician or an optometrist. You are assured that the physician is monitoring every aspect of the surgical evaluation and is there to answer all of your questions.

Laser refractive surgery is not covered by medical insurance. The cost for the procedure is $3500, which includes the treatment of both eyes, the preoperative evaluation and all post-operative care for the first year after the procedure.

If you have been considering refractive eye surgery, call us and make an appointment for an evaluation. Our goal is to make sure that you are an appropriate candidate for the procedure, and to make sure you proceed through the surgical process without unanswered questions or untoward complications.

Happy patients generate referrals, and that helps us grow!
